MOORPARK, Calif. (AP) — A tanker truck hit a car carrying a woman and two children on a Ventura County highway, killing a 9-year-old boy and seriously injuring a 7-year-old girl and both drivers involved.

California Highway Patrol Officer Marco Marin says the car turned in front of the tanker on State Route 118 on Friday in Moorpark, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of Los Angeles.

The tanker hit the car broadside before overturning, spilling gasoline in the roadway.

Marin says the boy in the car died at a hospital. The girl and the woman are in critical condition, while the tanker’s driver is expected to survive.

A hazardous materials team is at the site to clean up the gasoline.

Marin says the woman will be tested for drug or alcohol use.
