5 Killed, 1 Injured in Car-Train Wreck

September 24, 1994

BALTIMORE, Ohio (AP) _ A car and a Conrail freight train collided Friday night at an unlighted crossing, killing five people and injuring a sixth.

The 47-year-old man driving the car, three girls and a woman died, authorities said.

Only one person in the car survived; a 14-year-old girl who was in fair condition.

Fairfield County Sheriff Gary DeMastry said he believed the car was heading for a high school football game. He said he did not know how fast the car or the train were traveling, and had no other details.

The crossing was marked only by a wooden sign. Village Administrator Hugh Schaffner said a lighted sign was scheduled to go up this year.

Columbus TV station WBNS reported that the accident was the third in six years at the crossing.

A Conrail spokesman said investigators were at the site.

The collision occurred at 7:22 p.m. at a crossing near this central Ohio town about 20 miles southeast of Columbus.
