Sholan Farms Kicks Off Season
LEOMINSTER -- Sholan Farms will be holding its opening weekend on Saturday, kicking off the fall fruit-picking season.
The event with be held Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and feature apple picking, free wagon rides, hiking, and other activities.
Anyone itching to get to the farm prior to Saturday’s festivities will be able to attend a guided twilight hike of Sholan Farms being held at 8 p.m. on Friday. The hike is free and will feature a campfire, though it may be canceled if it rains.
Communities to get recycling boost
Five North Central Massachusetts communities have been awarded grants from the Baker-Polito administration totaling nearly $62,000 to strengthen their recycling efforts.
With the grant announcement, the governor and lieutenant governor also unveiled a new “Recycle Smart” initiative.
“Massachusetts cities and towns are important partners in our administration’s effort to promote and increase recycling opportunities across the commonwealth,” said Gov. Charlie Baker. “The funding awarded through the Sustainable Materials Recovery Program, and the launch of a recycling awareness initiative will both support local recycling solutions and continue Massachusetts’ long-standing commitment to recycling and environmental protection.”
The five local towns and city getting the grants are: Ashby, $4,900; Fitchburg, $38,500; Lunenburg, $7,200; Shirley, $3,500; and Townsend,, $7,800.
“It is always a struggle for our communities to deal with waste. The more that can be placed in the recycling stream is helpful,” said state Sen. Anne Gobi (D-Spencer), Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Environment Natural Resources and Agriculture.
RMV announces low number lottery
BOSTON -- The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles is issuing a reminder that the applications for the 2018 Low Number Plate Lottery are now being accepted online at mass.gov/platelottery or by mail. Applicants must apply by Aug. 27 and, if selected for a low number plate, will be notified after the drawing takes place in September.
Applications for the 2018 Low Plate Lottery must be received online or postmarked by Aug. 28, 2018 in order for the applicant to be eligible.
This year, there are 201 plates that are available through the low plate lottery. Some of this year’s low plate characters are 1400, 2558, 4J, Y4, 55Z, 77V, and Z81. To date, 9,936 applications have been received.
By law, winners must be announced by Sept. 15, 2018, and the names of winners will be posted on the RMV website.
Cultural Council holds input meeting
FITCHBURG -- The city’s Cultural Council will hold its annual reception and public input meeting at the Historical Society Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m.
Members of the community are welcome to attend the forum. Attendees will receive and overview on the purpose of the Cultural Council in the city, meet council members and offer public comment.
