Letter to the Editor: School volunteers make a real difference for students

December 17, 2018

School volunteers make a real difference for studentsThanks to SVA (Bridgeport School Volunteer Association) more than 40,000 book are put into Bridgeport public schools every year. Some of these books go to classrooms and libraries, but many are given directly to children to take home.As a volunteer tutor for many years, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the children’s sheer joy in getting books of their own. Donation of books to the schools is only one small part of the more than $1 million in goods and services that SVA puts into the schools every year.SVA has been supporting Bridgeport’s schools for more than 50 years, and it is my hope that the Board of Eduction includes funding in 2019 for the small staff without whose coordination of our many services, SVA could no longer function.Ruth PerlesVolunteer and board member, SVAStratford
