GIRLS SOCCER: Ridgefield stays perfect
Ridgefield entered Saturday’s girls soccer matchup against Greenwich undefeated and unscored upon through its first five games and it kept both impressive streaks going.
The Cardinals made it difficult for them, but the Tigers found a way to score two second half goals and register a hard-fought 2-0 win at Cardinal Stadium.
With the win, Ridgefield raised its record to 6-0, shutting out each of its opponents. The Tigers have outscored its foes, 24-0, through their first six games.
Riek’s first goal came in the 59th minute. Receiving a pass at the 30, Riek broke away from the defense and found herself in a 1-on-1 situation with GHS goalie Clay Garrett. Riek her shot past a diving Garrrett, giving Ridgefield a 1-0 lead.
Applying pressure, Ridgefield extended its lead to 2-0 with 16:30 remaining in the second half on Riek’s second tally. The first half was evenly played, with both teams generating chances. Lauren Castle made four saves in goal for Ridgefield, while Garrett had nine saves for Greenwich.
