Four pins give Scouts city title over Aquinas
David City and Aquinas wrestling split 14 matches evenly down the middle, 7-7, in Thursday’s triangular, but it was the Scouts earning bragging rights over their crosstown rivals with pins in four of those victories to go with three other decisions and a 33-31 dual victory.
David City also handled East Butler 63-17 and improved to 12-4 in dual matches on the season.
The David City showdown was a top-five matchup according to NEwrestle.com. The Scouts came in as the No. 3 team in the latest rankings while the Monarchs are No. 5.
Both teams feature six ranked wrestlers in their lineup.
Unfortunately, only two of the ranked wrestlers met on the mat. Aquinas’ No. 1 Joseph Reimers handled David City’s No. 4 Spencer Allen at 182 pounds, scoring takedown after takedown before finishing with a pin with 27 seconds left.
David City’s Jake Ingwersen pinning Aquains’ Owen Schramm, No. 5 at heavyweight, was the lone upset.
It was also David City’s final win of the night and perhaps the most crucial.
The Scouts led 33-22 at that point. The Monarchs followed with a 2-0 win for Ethan Schmid at 106 pounds and Hunter Vandenberg (No. 6 at 106) wrestling up a class and pinning at 113, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
Aquinas needed bonus point wins in each of the final two matches - a combination of two pins or a pin and a tech fall - to make up the difference.
The Monarchs fell to 6-2 in dual matches while East Butler is now 2-3.
