Western Carolina 24, Wofford 6
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) _ Freshman tailback Darius Hooks rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns to lead Western Carolina to a 24-6 win over Wofford on Saturday.
Even with Hooks’ performance, Wofford’s offense rolled up 326 yards _ 13 more than Western. But Wofford (1-2) had trouble pushing the ball into the end zone when the offense was in scoring position and turned the ball over five times.
After a scoreless first quarter, Western Carolina (2-0) took advantage of a couple of breaks in the second quarter to take a 10-0 lead.
The Catamounts Ken Hinsley kicked a 26-yard field goal with 6:30 left in the quarter following a Wofford fumble. Later in the quarter, Western Carolina’s Jerome Lardy set up the game’s first touchdown with a 51-yard punt return. Two plays later, Josh Brooks hit Hooks on a 10 yard swing pass for the score.
Early in the third quarter, Hooks burst 53 yards for a touchdown and the rout was on. The Catamounts led 24-0 before Wofford finally managed to cross the goal line.
The Terriers finally scored with 10:14 left in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard touchdown run by quarterback Brad Smothers.
Western Carolina coach Steve Hodgin said his offensive line had a lot to do with the win.
``Darius is a good back, but he’ll be the first to admit the line is doing a great job,″ Hodgin said. ``You’re only as good as the line in front of you. I think our offensive line is doing a great job.″
Hooks, who began fall practice as the fourth-string tailback, set a Western Carolina record for rushing yards in a game by a freshman. He now has 326 yards in two games.
Wofford was led by running back Lomar Foster, who had 68 yards on 13 attempts.
