Shepeard Blood Center requesting type O negative blood donations

February 6, 2019

The Shepeard Community Blood Center is asking for donations of type O negative blood from the CSRA due to a drop in quantity of ready blood and blood product.

According to a recent press release from the center, the need is “urgent and immediate.”

Type O negative blood is especially sought after because it is a universal blood type that can be transferred to any patient. However, only about 6.6 percent of the population has this blood type.

Donors must be in good general health, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be at least 17 years old (or 16 with written parental consent) to donate. Donors should also bring a photo ID or Shepeard donor card.

Shepeard Community Blood Center has three locations throughout the CSRA. All donors who visit any of the centers during the month of February will receive a pair of limited-edition Shepeard socks.

The Aiken center is located at 353 Fabian Drive. It is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
