Sewer Work Closes River Street In W-B
WILKES-BARRE — Some drivers who missed news announcements about construction on a section of North River Street had to deal with unexpected detours as crews with the Wyoming Valley Sewer Authority began a construction project Monday on the heavily used thoroughfare. The authority is replacing a 30-inch wastewater interceptor pipe that has shown signs of corrosion, according to authority Executive Director Jim Tomaine. North River Street between Maple Street and Courtright Avenue will be closed for the next six to eight weeks for the project. Access to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital from the north — via the southbound lane on North River Street — will remain open. Access to the hospital from the south for northbound traffic should be made via North Main and West Maple streets. Local traffic can access Hollenback, O’Neil and Kulp avenues via North Main and West Maple streets. Kulp, O’Neill and Hollenback avenues, which are one-way streets, will temporarily accommodate two-way traffic to facilitate access. Drivers should follow signs and adhere to the approved detour plan.
