Rockies Trade Mangum for Dave Veres
DENVER (AP) _ The Colorado Rockies sent right-hander Mark Mangum, the team’s first-round choice in the 1997 amateur draft, to the Montreal Expos on Friday to complete an offseason trade for reliever Dave Veres.
Mangum, 19, opened the season in Colorado’s extended spring camp, going 1-1 with a 2.33 ERA in six appearances. Outfielder Terry Jones also went to the Expos in the Dec. 10 deal.
Also Friday, the Rockies announced the signing of eight of their top 28 picks in the 1998 amateur draft.
The list included catcher Jeff Winchester, the Rockies’ third pick out of Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie, La.
The others were: South Alabama pitcher Justin Carter, ninth round; South Alabama outfielder Juan Pierre, 13th round; Jackson (Tenn.) Central High School pitcher Brandon Garner, 16th round; Auburn outfielder Josh Etheredge, 17th round; South Alabama outfielder Thomas Whitehurst, 20th round; Rutgers pitcher Michael Mundy, 24th round; and Cal-State Fullerton first baseman Kevin Duck, 25th round. Terms of the agreements were not announced.
