Ferrari, McCarthy help San Francisco beat Campbell in CBI
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Frankie Ferrari scored 18 points and Matt McCarthy had 15 points with a career-high tying 14 rebounds to help San Francisco beat Campbell 65-62 on Thursday night in the semifinals of the CBI.
The Dons (21-15) will play North Texas in the best-of-three finals beginning Monday in San Francisco.
Jordan Ratinho and Ferrari hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 25-23 and the Dons never again trailed. Mogga Lado’s layup tied it at 51-all midway through the second half, but USF answered with a 13-4 run, including six points by McCarthy, to push its lead to nine with 3:25 remaining. Two free throws by Chris Clemons pulled Campbell (18-16) to 64-61 with 35 seconds to go but, after Ferrari missed the front end of a 1-and-1, USF got a stop and McCarthy made 1 of 2 free throws to make it 65-61 with eight seconds left and the Dons held on from there.
Ratinho and Chase Foster scored 12 points apiece for USF.
Chris Clemons led the Camels with 18 points to move into second on the Big South Conference’s career scoring list with 2,232 points. The 5-foot-9 junior has scored in double figures in 82 consecutive games, the nation’s longest active streak of its kind.
