Man shot, killed Monday in Elyria apartment building

ELYRIA, Ohio -- A 20-year-old man died Monday evening after a shooting at an Elyria apartment complex.

The shooting happened about 6:05 p.m. at the Southwyck Apartments in the 1400 block of West River Road North. Officers went to the complex to investigate a shots-fired report.

The officers arrived and discovered Zachary Mason lying on the groud with several gunshot wounds in his torso, Capt. Chris Costantino said. Paramedics took Mason, 20, to University Hospitals’ Elyria campus where he later died.

As Elyria police detectives arrived at the scene and interviewed witnesses, they determined that Mason was shot in an apartment building on the second floor landing, which is a shared common area. Mason was able to leave the building after he was shot and made it to the parking lot area before collapsing.

The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Elyria police at 440-323-3302.
