Astros (79-46) update: On the heels of a 4-6 road trip, this series is the start of a 10-game homestand that also brings three-game sets with the Angels and Rays. Houston is 15-2 in its last 17 games at Minute Maid Park. … Michael Brantley is riding a 12-game hitting streak, during which he’s batting .481 (25-for-52) with eight doubles, a triple, two home runs and 11 RBIs. His average for the season is up to .335, second in the American League to the Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu (.339). … With one more home run, Yordan Alvarez will become the fifth Astros rookie to hit 20 in a season. Those who’ve done it: Carlos Correa (22 in 2015), Lance Berkman (21 in 2000), Glenn Davis (20 in 1985) and George Springer 20 in 2014).

Tigers (37-84) update: Detroit, which carries the majors’ worst record into this series, was swept by the Astros in a three-game set at Comerica Park in May. … Joe Jimenez, who took over as closer after Shane Greene was traded to the Braves at the July 31 deadline, suffered his fifth blown save in eight chances on Sunday, surrendering two ninth-inning runs to the Rays in a 5-4 defeat. … In a 1-0, 13-inning loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday, Detroit struck out 24 times without drawing a walk. … Although his batting average tops these toothless Tigers among AL qualifiers, Miguel Cabrera has been a shadow of his former self, slashing .278/.339/.390 with nine home runs and 48 RBIs (also a team high) in 400 at-bats. He has seven strikeouts and no hits in his last nine ABs. … Brandon Dixon’s 14 home runs are enough to lead the team.
