LUCERNE, Switzerland (AP) _ Olympic gold medalist and former world record-holder Donovan Bailey ran the second fastest 100 meters of the year Tuesday.

The Canadian ran 9.98 seconds at the Spitzenleichtathletik Luzern meet. well ahead of Americans Kenny Brockenburr and Bernard Williams, who ran 10.20 and 10.27, respectively. Only current world record-holder Maurice Greene has run faster this year, a 9.91.

Bailey said he was ``extremely relaxed'' and added: ``I could have run in the 9.80s today if I had fought harder.''

Bailey, who broke the world record in the finals of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, has struggled with his form since injuring his Achilles' tendon in 1998. He hopes to be fit to defend his Olympic title in Sydney in September.

He plans to train in Switzerland for the next week before running again at the Athletissima meet in Lausanne on July 5.
