Clinton Meeting Argentine Leader

May 9, 2000

WASHINGTON (AP) _ President Clinton and the president of Argentina will meet at the White House next month, the Clinton administration said Tuesday.

The June 13 visit, which also includes a working lunch with Clinton and others, will be Argentine President Fernando de la Rua’s first to Washington since his inauguration in December last year.

The White House said there is no specific topic on the agenda. ``The broad range of our close and important relationship with this respected ally will be covered during the meeting,″ a White House statement said.

A working visit differs from a state visit, which is largely ceremonial.

Earlier this month, Argentina and five other countries were put on notice that they could face unfair trade charges before the World Trade Organization unless they resolve disputes with the United States in coming weeks.

The Clinton administration had complained that Argentina failed to install what the administration considers sufficient patent protections for pharmaceuticals.
