Letter: Why does the state conduct primary elections for party benefit?

August 23, 2018

Another Minnesota primary election is over and these questions come to mind. Why does Minnesota conduct primary elections (at taxpayer expense) to determine the candidates for private organizations (political parties)?

Why does Minnesota have different ballot access rules for different political parties and different rules for those not tied to any political party?

Why does the government even recognize or determine what is a political party? Shouldn’t the ballot access rules be the same for everyone?
