East 56, West 53
BATON ROUGE, LA. (AP) _ Dawn Royster scored 10 points and the unbeaten East took control late Monday night to edge the West 56-53 in women’s basketball competition in the sixth National Sports Festival.
In running its record to 3-0, the East earned a berth in the gold medal final Wedneday night against the 2-1 South.
The West, 1-2, led for all of the first half and by three points with four minutes to play.
A basket by Carolin Dehn-Duhr with 2:42 to go gave the East the lead at 54-53 and Royster, from North Carolina, added an insurance field goal in the final minute.
″At the end we were smart enough to go to our strength - our big people inside,″ said East Coach Sue Rojcewicz of San Francisco. ″But give the West a lot of credit, they took us out of our game for nearly three quarters.″
Karon Howell led the balanced West with 10 points and Cherie Nelson and Penny Toler added eight apiece.
