Teacher Wants To Marry 14-Year-Old

February 11, 1998

SEATTLE (AP) _ A former schoolteacher, imprisoned for having sex with a 14-year-old boy who says he loves her, has told Oprah Winfrey she wants to marry him, her lawyer said.

David H. Gehrke, who represented Mary Kay Letourneau in the case, said Tuesday night that she defied his advice by making two 10-minute calls from prison to Ms. Winfrey’s talk show, which was being taped in Amarillo, Texas.

``We should get married,″ said Mrs. Letourneau, 36, who had a baby by the boy last May. The 9-month-old girl is in the custody of the boy’s mother.

Mrs. Letourneau began serving a seven-year, five-month prison term Friday after pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree rape of a child and then violating the terms of a suspended sentence by meeting with the boy.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the two had sex while she was free between Jan. 2 and Feb. 3, when they were spotted together in a car.

Gehrke and Bob Huff, a lawyer for the boy, were guests on the talk show. The boy has objected to being called a victim, and his mother and other relatives have supported Mrs. Letourneau in court.
