Hartford man pleads guilty to 2017 killing

October 3, 2018

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man who authorities say shot another man with whom he had an ongoing feud has pleaded guilty to murder.

The Hartford Courant reports that 25-year-old Samuel Stevenson pleaded guilty Tuesday under the Alford doctrine to the June 2017 shooting death of Timothy Burt Jr. The plea means he disputes the state’s account of events, but acknowledges there is enough evidence for a conviction.

Police say the men had been involved in several altercations with a larger group of their friends, and their disagreements boiled over on the morning of June 11, 2017.

Witnesses told police they saw Stevenson standing over Burt’s body.

Stevenson faces more than 32 years in prison at sentencing on Dec. 11. Had he been convicted at trial, he faced 60 years behind bars.
