Former Cheyenne bishop facing 3rd sex abuse accusation
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Roman Catholic Church officials in Cheyenne say a third person is alleging sexual abuse by a former bishop.
The diocese on Wednesday announced the “credible” claim against retired Bishop Joseph Hart, who worked as a bishop and auxiliary bishop in Cheyenne from 1976 to 2001. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports police launched a probe in July following an internal investigation by the diocese that found at least two other “credible” instances of abuse.
Police asked last week that potential witnesses or victims come forward with any information.
Hart has denied the accusations, citing a 2002 investigation by the Natrona County District Attorney’s Office that found “no evidence” of such abuse. His attorneys released a statement Wednesday reiterating the denial and saying, “The Diocese is not an investigative agency, nor is it qualified to serve as one.”
