Azeri Wins Vanity Handicap

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) _ Azeri took an early lead and held on under Mike Smith for a three-length victory Saturday in the $250,000 Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park.

The 4-year-old chestnut filly took the lead soon after the start and never lost it, covering 1 1/8 miles in 1:48 4/5. She carried and a career high weight of 125 pounds.

Sent off at odds of 3-10, she paid $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10. Affluent finished second and paid $2.40 and $2.10. Starrer and Collect Call finished in a dead heat three lengths back and paid $2.10 each to show.

Azeri, the daughter of Jade Dancer, earned $150,000 for a career total of $877,240. She has won seven of eight career starts.

``She just went around there today,″ Smith said. ``She was so happy, just playing, pricking her ears. I just kind of talked to her all the way around. I’ve never been on anything like that. She was phenomenal.″
