RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ Carolina goaltender Kevin Weekes sustained a concussion in a pileup of players with 5:11 left in the first period and had to leave the game against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night.

Weekes was replaced by Arturs Irbe. He was on the ice for about five minutes before being helped to his feet and off the ice by two teammates.

The team announced late in the second period that Weekes had a concussion.

Weekes, fourth in the NHL in goals-against average and second in save percentage, had allowed two goals before he was involved in a pile of players in the crease after Kirk Maltby pushed Hurricanes defenseman Bret Hedican into his goalie. Weekes appeared to be hit in the head Hedican’s elbow.

Weekes was 8-6-4 with a 1.99 GAA heading into the game, a rematch of last year’s Stanley Cup finals.
