INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Ecuador’s Fidel Solorzano, the first-day leader in the decathlon in the Pan American Games, was forced to withdraw Thursday after suffering an injured left ankle during a practice jump in the pole vault.

The pole vault was the eighth event in the 10-event competition and, after seven events, Solorzano had fallen into fourth place.

After accumulating 4,013 points in the first five events Wednesday, Solorzano began Thursday’s competition with a heavily taped left hamstring.

He discarded the bandage following Thursday’s first event, the 110-meter high hurdles. Then, just before the start of the pole vault, he suffered the ankle injury and was taken to Wishard Hospital for X-rays.

The X-rays revealed that Solorzano suffered a badly sprained ankle.
