WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Authorities have released the names of the West Springfield husband and wife who died after a domestic altercation and police shooting.

Police think 52-year-old Peter Doherty stabbed his wife, 45-year-old Renee Herbert, on Tuesday morning in the apartment they share.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni says Doherty was then shot by police when he charged at them with a knife. Both were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police responded to an apartment building in the city just after 6 a.m. Tuesday after getting a 911 call from a woman in another unit who said she heard a commotion and a woman crying for help.

Police entered the apartment with the help of building management and saw a man holding a knife and an injured woman on the floor.
