Dow Gains 37 in Early Trading

December 22, 1997

NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices are higher in active trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 37 points in today’s early going. Gainers on the New York Stock Exchange hold a 3-2 lead over losers.

The Nasdaq Composite Index has gained eleven points and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Stock Index is ahead four points.

Wall Street will try to build on Friday’s late comeback, rather than fret over the early, steep decline.

The market was down nearly 270 Dow points at one point Friday, before trimming the losses to about 90 points.

Asian stock markets were sharply lower today, with Tokyo stocks closing at their lowest level in about two and a half years.

Bond prices are slightly higher.

Wall Street conducts a full session both today and tomorrow, and just half-days on Wednesday and Friday.
