BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ Pierre Turgeon scored twice to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 4-1 exhibition victory over the U.S. Olympic team Wednesday night.

Turgeon, who has only two goals in eight NHL games this season, scored in the second and third periods as the Sabres dominated.

Buffalo is the second of the 15 U.S.-based NHL teams that Team USA will face in a 64-game tour before the Olympics in February in Albertville, France.

With the loss, the Americans, who beat the Minnesota North Stars 6-3 on Oct. 7, are 9-10-4 overall and 1-1 against the NHL teams. They play the New York Islanders on Thursday night.

Tony Tanti and Kevin Haller scored Buffalo’s other goals, while Sean McEachern scored Team USA’s only goal in 36 shots on goalie Daren Puppa.

The Sabres took a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals by Tanti and Haller.

Less than two minutes into the game, Tanti took a pass off a faceoff in the Team USA zone and cut across in front unchecked before slipping a short backhander past USA goalie Les Kuntar’s stick.

Haller put Buffalo up by two five minutes later while the Sabres were shorthanded. He finished off a 2-on-1 with Dave Snuggerud by tapping the cross-crease pass into the net.

Buffalo took a 3-0 lead at 4:31 of the second period when Turgeon led a 3- on-1, then snapped a 15-footer through the legs of a defender and Kuntar.

Team USA finally scored late in the second period. Puppa gave up a long rebound on Joe Sacco’s shot and McEachern backhanded the puck into the open side.

The goal increased McEachern’s lead among Team USA scorers. The former Boston University wing has 12 goals and 11 assists in 18 games.

Turgeon closed out the scoring when he tapped in a loose puck while standing at the side of the crease 1:08 into the final period.
