LAS VEGAS (AP) — Teachers in the Las Vegas area have approved a new three-year contract that includes pay raises.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the unionized teachers at the Clark County School District ratified the contract Thursday. The agreement still needs the approval of the school board.

The contract allows teachers to move a step up in the salary scale, retroactive to June 1, and increases the district's health care contributions.

The agreement will run through the 2020-2021 school year. It comes after an arbitration process that lasted more than a year and a half.

Union president Vikki Courtney says the union and district combined spent more than $1.5 million in the process.

The newspaper reports the teachers and the district will have to petition the Nevada Legislature in 2019 for future raises.
