CLEVELAND, Miss. (AP) — A foundation is giving a Mississippi university $3 million to promote better teaching by faculty.

Delta State University announced the gift from the Jackson-based Gertrude C. Ford Foundation on Thursday.

The Cleveland university has named its center for teaching and learning after Ford, whose foundation has given millions to universities statewide. The center helps professors improve how they teach classes, advise students and perform research.

Board member John Lewis says the foundation wanted its money to be invested in improving people, not buildings.

Gray Kane, who directs the center, says many professors haven't studied course design, teaching or mentorship. He says improving faculty performance in those areas will help more students stay in school and earn degrees.

Delta State says it's the third largest gift in school history.
