Bride of 12 hours collapses in husband’s arms

July 9, 1997

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) _ A bride of 12 hours, Susanne Laatz Mangan was climbing the stairs to her honeymoon suite when she collapsed into her husband’s arms and died, possibly of a heart attack.

An autopsy showed that Mrs. Mangan, 24, an avid runner who taught elementary school, died from some type of heart problem.

It happened Saturday, 12 hours after she married Sean Mangan in a chapel at her alma mater, Saint Mary’s College.

``I’m happy for her that she could be married,″ said bridesmaid Andrea Borgatello. ``She was so beautiful and she was the happiest she had ever been in her life. This was the most horrifying thing that could happen.″

The couple had just left their reception and checked in to a bed-and-breakfast. When Mrs. Mangan collapsed on the stairs, Mangan carried her downstairs, where her cousin, a surgeon, tried to revive her.

Tests were being done to determine the exact cause of death, said St. Joseph County coroner Charles Hurley.
