HOUSTON (AP) _ A memorial fund to educate new mothers and the medical community about postpartum depression has been established in the name of Andrea Yates’ five children, who were drowned by their mother last year.
Houston mental health officials on Tuesday announced the Yates Children Memorial Fund for Women’s Mental Health.
Money from the fund will go toward education programs for new mothers and fathers; literature will also be distributed in maternity wards, gynecologist and obstetrician offices.
Yates, 37, was convicted in March of capital murder and is serving a life sentence. A year ago Thursday, she filled the family’s bathtub with water and held each of her children face down until they drowned.
Jurors rejected defense claims that she was legally insane because she suffered from schizophrenia and postpartum psychosis.
The Mental Health Association of Greater Houston set up the fund, which had about $30,000 in hand.
