Five Killed in Indonesian Province
BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) _ Two policemen were killed and the bodies of three civilians were found Tuesday in Aceh, a province in northwestern Indonesia where rebels are fighting for independence.
Unidentified assailants shot the Indonesian policemen as they were riding motorcycles on a main road in Tiro subdistrict, police said.
In the nearby village of South Aceh, the bodies of two men were found in a grassy field. The body of a third man was found in a rice paddy in Glumpang Tiga, another village in the area.
More than 2,000 people have died and 150,000 have been displaced in the decade-long battle for independence in the province, 1,250 miles northwest of the Indonesian capital Jakarta.
The rebels have stepped up their demands for freedom since East Timor voted for independence from Indonesia in August.
