Falcon Women Open with Win

The Fitchburg State women’s basketball team kicked off the 2018-19 season Wednesday with an 84-71 victory over Rivier on the road.

The Falcons (1-0) were paced by Emma Thomson, who scored a team-high 22 points. Catherine Coppinger added 18 and 13 rebounds and Angelina Marazzi chipped in with 15 points for FSU, which led 34-26 at halftime and never looked back.

Rivier (0-1) got a game-high 34 points from Kaylee Kacavas in the loss.

Fitchburg State returns to action Wednesday at Clark University.

FSU hockey settles for draw

The Fitchburg State ice hockey team saw an early lead disappear, with the Falcons tying MASCAC rival Plymouth State on the road, 2-2, on Wednesday.

Ryan Murphy and Sascha Figi each scored in the first 8:39 to put the Falcons (1-2-1, 1-0-1 MASCAC) up 2-0.

But Plymouth (3-0-1, 1-0-1) roared back, getting goals for Alec LeFave and Jake Gebner, the latter with 4:29 left in the game, to pull even.

Ricky Kramer, Josh Victor, Nick DiNicola and Connor McPherson picked up assists for Fitchburg State.

FSU goalie Brian McGrath made 52 saves.

Fitchburg State men fall in opener

The Fitchburg State men’s basketball team dropped its opener Wednesday, falling 87-64 at Rhode Island College.

Tyrell St. John led the way for the Falcons (0-1) with 17 points, while Kewan Platt contributed 15.

Rhode Island saw four players notch double figures in points, led by Benjamin Vezele’s game-high 22. Justin Campbell added 19 points to go with 11 rebounds.

The Falcons host Lasell Saturday afternoon for Fitchburg State’s home opener. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.

Richard, DeHorsey nab LEC honors

Senior Molly Richard and junior Aislinn DeHorsey, both of Leominster, were selected to the Little East Conference (LEC) All-Conference teams on Thursday afternoon.

Richard, a former St. Bernard’s star, was named to the LEC All-Conference second team after collecting a team-leading 30 points on 13 markers and four assists as well as four game-winning tallies and one defensive save in 20 games for the Green and Gold.

DeHorsey, a former Leominster High standout, collected LEC All-Conference honorable mentions for the Falcons after registering 27 points on nine scores and nine helpers, while adding a conference-best nine defensive saves in 20 appearances for Fitchburg State.
