Perfect Attendance for Foursome
LOWELL -- This is the 20th edition of the Women’s City Golf Tournament and when all is said and done at Vesper Country Club this afternoon four women will have played in all 20.
Amazingly, the quartet represents all four of the participating clubs, one from each -- and three of them have taken home the championship.
The fantastic foursome consists of Mt. Pleasant’s Clarissa Samuels, Vesper’s Janice Carroll, Long Meadow’s Anne Farley and Nabnasset Lake’s Barbara Crowell.
Samuels won the inaugural event in 1999, Carroll was victorious in 2011 and Farley captured the trophy in 2012. Maybe it will be Crowell’s turn this year.
Those three aren’t the only former champs in the 2018 field teeing it up at Vesper Country Club. Caitlin Barry (LM) has won it five times, Cheryl Popp (Vesper) took the title in 2010, Jessica Hughes (Vesper) in 2016 and of course Molly Smith (Long Meadow) is the defending champ.
Five-time champ Liz Friel qualified for the Vesper team and wanted to play but has a baby due in about three weeks so she decided to sit this one out.
Some observers think the tournament could come down to a family battle between 13-year-old Molly and 14-year-old Morgan Smith, who won the Vesper club championship two weeks ago by 28 shots over 36 holes.
They are the daughters of eight-time Men’s City Tournament champ Phil Smith and currently live in Westford.
There are a number of other players who are likely to have a say in the outcome, although the tournament record score of 4-under par 68 set by Alison Walshe in 2002 and 2006 (both at Vesper) is probably safe.
Walshe, a Westford native, is now a touring professional.
One of the great traditions of the Women’s City Tournament is the scholarship money the committee hands out every year.
This year they have upped the ante again, with some 20 young girls receiving grants.
