Jiri Vesely beats Adrian Mannarino to win Heineken Open
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Czech qualifier Jiri Vesely captured his first ATP Tour singles title when he beat unseeded Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3 in Saturday’s final of the Heineken Open.
The 21-year-old Vesely won four matches in qualifying then beat second seed Ernests Gulbis and fourth seed Kevin Anderson on his way to his first tour final; honing his preparation for the Australian Open.
He recovered from a break down to win the first set in 37 minutes and clinched the second, after a brief rain delay, with his 43rd ace of the tournament.
India’s Leander Paes won his 55th career doubles title at age 41 when he teamed with Raven Klaasen to beat Dominic Inglot and Florin Mergea 7-6 (1), 6-4 in the doubles final.
