South Florida Shoe Manufacturer Lays Off 400
MIAMI (AP) _ Suave Shoe Corp., the largest shoe manufacturer in Florida, has laid off 400 of its 1,400 workers because of competition from low-cost imports, company officials say.
″We have no immediate plans to recall any of them,″ said Pedro Mirones, secretary and assistant general manager. ″We normally shut down the plant in summer for two weeks and it had been scheduled for Aug. 19. but we decided to do it early this year because there was no more work.″
Some of the laid-off workers have been employed by Suave for 20 years.
The Miami Lakes company is not alone in its problems.
Umberto Lopez, president of Joy Footwear in Hialeah, said he plans to lay off 20 to 30 of his 400 employees in the near future. And Alberto Barrocas, president of Hialeah’s Injection Footwear Corp., said he will have to lay off some of his 800 employees ″little by little″ unless there is a market turn.
