JERUSALEM (AP) _ A suicide bomber set off explosives Tuesday at the entrance of a central Jerusalem food stand popular with police, killing himself and injuring four Israelis, police said.

It was the first suicide bombing in Jerusalem since a pair of attacks June 18-19 killed 26 Israelis and prompted the army to occupy seven of the eight major Palestinian towns in the West Bank.

Jerusalem Police Chief Mickey Levy said the bomber entered a falafel stand on a busy central Jerusalem street and detonated the bomb. He said it appeared it went off prematurely.

``What is clear now is that the bomber died and there are four wounded,″ he said.

The blast occurred in one of the most heavily guarded areas of downtown Jerusalem, on Hanevi’im street. The area divides traditionally Arab east Jerusalem and west Jerusalem.

Glass shards littered the street in front of the Yemenite Felafel Stand, which is popular with Jerusalem police whose headquarters are nearby.

Police said several people were injured, and that the blast was caused by a suicide bomber. Ambulance officials said two people were hospitalized.

An official in the office of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, David Baker, condemned the bombing.

``Palestinian terror is aiming to instill a perpetual state of fear in Israelis,″ he said. ``This attack is proof that the Palestinian Authority continues to believe that terror will further its goals and this is mistaken.″
