New president named for Fort Wayne Newspapers

February 28, 2019

Ogden Newspapers has named Scott Stanford president and CEO of Fort Wayne Newspapers, company officials announced Wednesday.

Stanford, 53, will replace former CEO Michael Christman, who is now Ogden’s regional publisher, based in Wheeling, West Virginia. Stanford is the former publisher of the Lawrence Journal-World, an Ogden-owned newspaper in Lawrence, Kansas.

Fort Wayne Newspapers is the business agent for The Journal Gazette, which is locally owned and independently operated, and The News-Sentinel, which is owned by Ogden Newspapers. Both The Journal Gazette and The News-Sentinel have offices at 600 W. Main St.

Stanford’s previous work includes being an advertising director, editor and reporter. He was also general manager of Texas newspapers the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, the San Angelo Standard-Times and the Kingsville Record, as well as the Steamboat Pilot & Today of Routt County, Colorado.

“Our job is to continue to offer to the community content and coverage and advertising in a valuable product,” Stanford said. “I think that’s the critical aspect of it, is to be nimble, to be creative in putting together a package of content, both news and advertising, on a daily basis in whatever format the reader wants.”

Stanford said it’s important to be “super customer-focused.”

“It should be a tremendous customer experience, whether it’s online, on the phone, on an app or in print,” Stanford said. “That relationship with the reader is paramount.”

Stanford’s wife, Kelly, is the chief strategy officer for Communities in Schools of Mid-America. The couple have two daughters, Maggie and Libby. Maggie sells software in Washington, D.C., and Libby is a junior at the University of Missouri, studying journalism.

Stanford said his goal is to continue to make the newspaper a daily part of residents’ lives.

“I’m a big believer in communication and transparency and believe it’s my role to lift the team up and put them in a position to succeed,” Stanford said.

In an interview Wednesday, Christman said Stanford brings great ideas and concepts to the newspaper industry.

“He has been important to us in Ogden Newspapers on different projects from digital concepts to advertising ideas,” Christman said. “That mindset is great that he brings to the table, and I’m looking forward to him bringing that expertise and those ideas to Fort Wayne.”

Christman spent 12 years in Fort Wayne.

“Fort Wayne is a great place. The community is growing, a lot of things are happening and it’s a great time for the city of Fort Wayne, Allen County and the surrounding counties,” Christman said.
