Avis Group Holdings Inc., up $4.375 to $29.875

Cendant, which owns about 18 percent of the car rental company, has offered to buy the rest for $29 a share.

J.C. Penney Co., down $1.688 to $16.25

The department store chain’s second-quarter operating profit plunged 90 percent due to lower sales and price cuts.

Target Inc., down $2.063 to $27.875

The discount retail chain met Wall Street earnings estimates and said it was comfortable with 15 percent annual earnings per share growth estimates.


HearMe Inc., up $3 to $7.25

Qualcomm will integrate the Internet communication company’s live-voice software into its email application.

PcOrder.com Inc., up $1.438 to $6.313

The online computer product sales technology firm announced a licensing agreement with America Online. The company also announced a stock buy back.

Electronic Arts Inc., up $1.938 to $91.50

Interactive entertainment software designer Electronic Arts declared a 2-for-1 stock split.
