Woman dies apparently trying to retrieve boat from lake
HAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say the body of a woman who died while apparently trying to retrieve a paddleboat from a mid-Michigan lake has been recovered.
The Gladwin County sheriff’s office says the body of 68-year-old Barbara Ogg was found Saturday along the shoreline of Smallwood Lake in Hay Township, about 130 miles (209 kilometers) northwest of Detroit. Her body was attached to the boat with a rope.
Investigators say they believe Ogg waded into the water after spotting the boat adrift and wrapped the rope from the boat around her arm. She was wearing waders and a life jacket, but they say the waders filled with water and the life jacket came off.
Authorities believe her body was in the water more than a week. Preliminary information says it’s an accidental drowning.
