Food for Fines lets library patrons pay fines by donating food

April 2, 2019

Food for Fines is truly a win-win.

During National Library Week, Sunday through April 13, Spokane County Library District patrons with fines on their account can get up to $20 of fines forgiven by donating food.

For every non-perishable food item donated, $2 will be removed from a cardholder’s account.

Donations then go to the Second Harvest Food Bank and other regional food banks which serve Spokane County.

Food for Fines can only be applied to overdue and/or damaged items fees. The donations cannot be applied to lost-item charges or accounts referred to collection

Since the program launched in 2013, the library has collected more than 23,000 pounds of food and forgiven thousands of dollars in fines.

Food bins will be posted at all district locations. Visit www.scld.org/locations to find the library closest to you.
