Cross country: WHS girls 7th, boys 8th at Blackshirt Invitational

September 5, 2018

WAUKESHA — Watertown’s girls placed seventh while the boys took eighth at the Blackshirt Challenge at Minooka Park on Saturday.

The Gosling girls scored 154 points.

Senior Marissa Wackett (14th, 21 minutes, 56 seconds), junior Cara Smith (18th, 22:11), sophomore Autumn Meyers (32nd, 23:06), junior Kayla Tobin (44th, 23:55) and senior Michaelee Teska (46th, 23:57) scored for the Goslings. Junior Vanessa Olson (48th, 24:13) and sophomore Emma Gilbertsen (54th, 24:39) also competed.

“We’re being carried by our veterans — Marissa, Cara and Autumn,” Watertown cross country coach Kirk Wackett said.

“We’re solid that way. We’re still in flux with runners four through seven. Our seven last week was our four this week. They are flipping around a bit.”

Watertown’s boys scored 206 points.

Senior Matthew Engel (22nd, 18:11), junior Izak Jensen (35th, 18:54), sophomore Christopher Kitzhaber (38th, 18:56), senior Joshua Vana (41st, 19:11) and junior Griffin Radtke (70th, 20:36) scored for the Goslings. Sophomore Nathan Williams (75th, 20:48) and freshman Oliver Meyers (79th, 21:00) also competed.

“The boys (are in the same situation),” coach Wackett said. “Five through nine are in fluctuation. (Junior) Nathan Doherty was the big mover. He was ninth last week, so we had him designated for JV. He was our fifth best runner.

“Our first four are pretty solid. Early on, Vana was our No. 2 runner. He’s rising up right now. He dropped over a minute. Matthew is working hard. He’s building a deep base. He wants to be faster than he is, but we ran on drier courses last year.

“We just need to sustain in the middle of the race. That comes with training. We’re going to bloom at the right time.”

Watertown travels to Menomonee Falls for the Matt Hadler Invitational Saturday.
