Man charged in slaying of woman driving van in Philadelphia

August 1, 2018

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A man has been charged in the shooting death of a woman who was driving a van with several passengers — including three young children and her twin sister — in north Philadelphia earlier this year.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that 33-year-old Timothy B. Barnes was charged with murder, conspiracy, aggravated assault and firearms counts in the Feb. 21 death of 23-year-old Tyisha Timmons.

Police said she was driving on North Broad Street when two men opened fire and the vehicle was struck by as many as five bullets.

Capt. John Ryan said earlier that the van may have inadvertently traveled through another gun battle blocks away and minutes earlier, but whether that was connected to the fatal shooting wasn’t clear.

Barnes’ attorney didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
