KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) _ Tupperware, which for decades relied solely on face-to-face sales at parties, on Tuesday began selling its housewares over the Internet.

The move online is the latest innovation for the company in its efforts to get Tupperware containers into the hands of its customers following a year of declining sales.

Tupperware, which had $1.1 billion in sales last year, announced in May that it would sell merchandise on the Home Shopping Network during television specials.

And last Christmas, the company began selling Tupperware products at shopping mall kiosks.

Tupperware officials emphasized that the new ventures will supplement, not replace, the traditional Tupperware parties.

``Our party-plan platform remains our core selling method,'' said Betty Palm, president of Tupperware U.S. ``The Internet, our mall kiosk program and the new venture with the Home Shopping Network are part of our ... strategy to attract more customers to our brand and direct new leads to our sales force.''

The Web site, located at www.tupperware.com, was designed to appeal to Tupperware's predominantly female customers by including a personal recipe database, recipe exchange e-mail capabilities and home economics advice, said Susan Hight, manager of Internet programs.

``We want women to feel as though they are browsing through a favorite magazine, with updated regular features and service they can come back to often,'' she said.
