Phoenix stuffed in North opener by Blue Devils

September 17, 2018

LODI — Colton Nicolay and Austin Soehle each rushed for two touchdowns in host Lodi’s 34-14 Capitol North football opener over Luther Prep.

“Lodi’s a good team with a tradition of winning,” Luther Prep coach Justin Gregorius said. “We had a great opening drive but after that Lodi took over.”

The Phoenix (3-2, 0-1 North) took the opening possession to the 10 but the Blue Devils (5-0, 1-0) turned the guests over on downs. Lodi forced a pair of turnovers and held Luther Prep scoreless until the fourth quarter.

“It was a learning opportunity for us,” Gregorius said. “It’s a good quality program and a good challenge for us. They’re definitely above what we’ve seen so far this year.”

Elijah Schulz finished with 86 yards on seven carries with a 36-yard scoring run. David Bauman also caught a 15-yard TD toss for the Phoenix, who host Lakeside Lutheran next week.
