Troy State 31, Central Florida 10
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ Quarterback Mike Turk ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as Troy State downed Central Florida 31-10 Saturday and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II championship game.
The Trojans won their 11th consecutive game and improved their record to 11-1-1. Troy State has been in the Division II playoffs three of the last four years and won the championship in 1984.
Central Florida, 9-3, took an early 3-0 lead on Ed O’Brien’s a 41-yard field goal in the first quarter.
But Troy State capitalized on three turnovers in the second quarter, ending the Knights’ hopes for a national crown.
Troy State recovered a fumble by Central Florida quarterback Darrin Slack and, three plays later, Turk ran 54 yards to put the Trojans ahead to stay.
Central Florida fumbled on the kickoff return, and Troy State capitalized when Turk hit Mike Kelley with an 18-yard touchdown pass. Ted Clem kicked a 39-yard field goal to give Troy State a 17-3 halftime advantage.
Turk scored again from the 1 late in the third period and halfback Robert Carter completed a 3-yard toss to split end Greg Harris for the Trojans’ final score.
Slack threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Poe White in the final two minutes to close out the scoring.
