OBIT-STAN LEE

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Comic book genius Stan Lee, the architect of the contemporary comic book, has died. He was 95. The creative dynamo who revolutionized the comics by introducing human frailties in superheroes such as Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four and The Incredible Hulk, was declared dead Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to Kirk Schenck, an attorney for Lee’s daughter, J.C. Lee. As the top writer at Marvel Comics and later as its publisher, he revived the industry in the 1960s by offering the costumes and action craved by younger readers while insisting on sophisticated plots, college-level dialogue, satire, science fiction, even philosophy. Spider-Man, the Hulk and X-Men were among the Lee creations that went on to become stars of blockbuster films.

CELEBRITIES AMONG THOSE AFFECTED BY CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES

LOS ANGELES (AP) — They aren’t asking for sympathy. But one actress says people shouldn’t be quick to heap scorn on celebrities who have lost their homes and possessions to the California wildfires. Several actors and musicians have gone online to report they’ve had to flee their homes — and more than a few of them still don’t know whether their homes survived the flames. Among those who have evacuated include Lady Gaga, Martin Sheen and Alyssa Milano — while Gerard Butler and Robin Thicke are among those who have lost their homes. Julie Bowen of “Modern Family” said everyone affected by the wildfires deserves sympathy — famous or not. She notes that while people think of Malibu and surrounding areas as playgrounds for the rich and famous, there are many people who aren’t wealthy — and have lost everything.

CELEBRITIES - FIREFIGHTERS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Many celebrities have taken to social media to update their followers about how they are making out in the flames engulfing large chunks of Southern California. But the tweets aren’t all just about them. Several have mentioned the firefighters trying to bring the blazes under control. Many noted that firefighters have rushed to the scene even as they were abandoning the area. Oscar winning director Guillermo del Toro mentioned first responders in a tweet, saying they “are heroes.”

FAMED WESTERN MOVIE LOT LOST TO FLAMES

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It has hosted many a Western scene, from barfights, to shootouts and bad guys getting tossed in the slammer. But the southern California wildfires have claimed Paramount Ranch’s famed “Western Town.” The location, nestled in the mountains west of Los Angeles, was first used in 1927 and featured a full-scale rendition of a jail, hotel and saloon. The TV series “Westworld” was among the many that filmed there. The entire town burned to the ground. No immediate word on whether Paramount will undertake the effort to rebuild it.

ACTOR WHO VOICED “HAL” IS DEAD

NEW YORK (AP) — A Canadian actor who played some of Shakespeare’s most intriguing characters onstage but perhaps is best known for supplying the creepily calm voice of the rogue computer HAL in Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” has died. Douglas Rain was 90. The Stratford Festival says Rain died Sunday of natural causes just outside Stratford, Ontario. He was in the festival’s founding company and spent 32 seasons performing there, until 1998. His roles at Stratford included playing Claudio in “Measure for Measure” in 1954, Malvolio in “Twelfth Night” in 1957 and Edgar in “King Lear” in 1964. But it was the aloof voice of HAL where Rain entered the public’s consciousness. The American Film Institute named the malevolent computer the 13th greatest movie villain of all time.

BOX OFFICE

LOS ANGELES (AP) — And you thought the malls and department stores were rushing Christmas? So is Hollywood. So far, people are rushing to see a holiday themed movie, even though most families haven’t picked out their Thanksgiving turkey yet. Finishing first in the box office race is “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” — which overcame mixed reviews to become the top choice at the nation’s multiplexes. Last week’s top film, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” drops to number two. Universal is hoping to get the drop on Christmastime moviegoers by releasing “The Grinch” early — and riding the wave through the end of the holiday season.

PETE DAVIDSON APOLOGIZES TO AFGHAN WAR VET

NEW YORK (AP) — He dished it out. And Pete Davidson has shown he can take it, too. A week after mocking the appearance of a veteran who lost an eye fighting in Afghanistan, the “Saturday Night Live” cast member tried to make amends. He said on Saturday’s show that Lt. Com. Dan Crenshaw “deserves all the respect in the world.” That level of respect was lacking the week before when Davidson made fun of Crenshaw’s eye patch, saying it made him look like “a hit man in a porno movie.” After winning his race this past Tuesday. Crenshaw appeared with Davidson — and got in some digs of his own. But the biggest “burn” wasn’t from the veteran — but from his phone. Crenshaw’s phone rang while he was on the set — and the ringtone was a song by Ariana Grande, Davidson’s ex-finance.

Before leaving the set, Crenshaw encouraged everyone to pull together — and offered words of praise to Davidson’s dad, a firefighter who died on 9/11.
