SHIZUOKA, Japan (AP) _ Ricardo Lopez of Mexico stopped Japanese challenger Kimio Hirano in the eighth round Sunday and retained his World Boxing Council strawweight title.

Referee Rudy Ortega stopped the fight without even starting a count one minute, 42 seconds into the eighth round after Lopez knocked Hirano down with a right.

The unbeaten champion, making his first defense of the title he won by stopping Japan’s Hideyuki Ohashi last October, dominated the one-sided bout.

Lopez weighed in at 103 1/2 pounds and Hirano 105 pounds.


TOKYO (AP) - Jim Traber charged pitcher Kazumi Sonokawa and the two grappled after Traber was hit by a pitch in a Pacific League game Sunday. Traber was ejected, and his Kintetsu Buffaloes were beaten by the Lotte Orioles 6-4.

Marvell Wynne drove in three runs, two with a homer, to lead the Hanshin Tigers to a 9-4 victory over the Chunichi Dragons.


UMAG, Yugoslavia (AP) - Dimitri Polyakov of the Soviet Union scored his first ATP victory Sunday when he beat Javier Sanchez of Spain 6-4, 6-4 in the final of the Yugoslav Open.

Polyakov, No. 169 on the world list, overpowered Sanchez in 75 minutes.


MISANO ADRIATICO, Italy (AP) - Michael Doohan of Australia captured his second victory in eight days on the world motorcycling championship circuit Sunday, beating Americans John Kocinski and Eddie Lawson in the 500-cc race of the Italian motorcycling Grand Prix.

Kocinski, a former 250-cc champion, drove his Yamaha to second place, 8.6 seconds behind the winner’s Honda.

Lawson, on an Italian Cagiva, finished third.


TOKI, Japan (AP) - Satoshi Higashi beat Tsuneyuki Nakajima 2-up in the 36- hole final Sunday and won the Japan PGA Match Play Championship.

It was Higashi’s first Japan PGA match play title.

Tsukasa Watanabe beat Hideki Kase 4 and 3 for third place.


MUNAKATA, Japan (AP) - Yuko Moriguchi shot a 1-under-par 71 in heavy rain Sunday and won the Yakult women’s tournament by two shots with a 54-hole total of 214. Moriguchi started the round two strokes off the pace.

Kasumi Adachi finished second after a final-round 72 on the 6,183-yard, Fukuoka Kokusai Country Club course.

Fusako Nagata, who led for the first two rounds, shot a 78 and tied for fourth.


TOKYO (AP) - Daniele Nardello of Italy edged Chris Peers of Belgium by 0.15 seconds Sunday and won the men’s 81.6-mile event in the International Cycle Road Race through the streets of Tokyo.

Tappel Miranda of the Netherlands edged Japan’s Yumiko Suzuki by 0.09 seconds in the women’s 37.8-mile race.

Americans Janie Eickhoff and Mindee Mayfield finished eighth and ninth.


AREZZO, Italy (AP) - Italian cyclist Massimiliano Lelli outsprinted Leonardo Sierra of Venezuela to the finish line and won the Tour of Tuscany Sunday.

Lelli completed the 123.6-mile race in five hours, one minute.


TOKYO (AP) - American champion Konishiki ran his record to 8-0 at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament Sunday, forcing No. 2 ranked Misugisato out of the ring.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko were among the 11,000 spectators who saw Konishiki, heaviest among sumo wrestlers at 524 pounds, charge the 332- pound Misugisato with hand thrusts, grabbed his foe’s belt and forced him out.

Akebono, another American wrestler from Hawaii, suffered his fifth defeat against three victories.
