F1 Driver Seems OK After Crash

February 5, 2004

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) _ Formula One driver Olivier Panis walked away after hitting a tire barrier at 130 mph during testing Thursday, but was hospitalized for precautionary tests.

The 37-year-old Panis, the oldest driver in Formula One, crashed backward into the barrier at the Circuit de Catalunya.

He was to be held overnight at the Hospital General de Catalunya, and was expected to return to testing next week, Toyota spokeswoman Silke Albus said.

``We are told he doesn’t have any apparent injuries,″ Albus said. ``We are confident there was no structural failure to the car, but we are undertaking a full investigation.″
