Carl James Cabala, 92, of Peotone, passed away Thursday (May 16, 2019) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.
He was born Dec. 2, 1926, in Portage, Pa., the son of Karl and Anna (Gabriel) Cabala. He was a World War II Navy veteran serving on the USS Brown. He then participated in yearly reunions with other USS Brown veterans.
He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, the Peotone American Legion Post 392 and the VFW. He was the owner and operator of a Mobil gas station and then worked as a service manager for Ford car dealerships until his retirement. He was an avid fisherman and golfer.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Buelt) Cabala, whom he married Dec. 10, 2001, in Portage. He also is survived by a daughter, Carla (Lynn) Gianetti, of Elwood; a grandson, Michael Gianetti; and two great-grandchildren, Damen and Donovan Gianetti; five stepchildren, Karen (Herbert) Priebe, of Peotone, Sharon (Joseph) Garner, of Peotone, Rose (Greg) Siemsen, of Clinton, Michael (Robin) Gundlach, of Dwight, and Paul (Grace) Gundlach, of Hammond, Ind.; 14 stepgrandchildren; 18 stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Anthony (Esther) Sabala, of Jamestown, Pa., and Edward Sabala, of Portage; and a sister, Helen Wroblicky, of Richton Park. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Charles Cabala.
Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, May 20 at the Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m.Tuesday, May 21, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Peotone. The Rev. Roger Kutzner will officiate. Committal services and military honors will be 1:30 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. Memorials to the family’s wishes would be appreciated.
