UPCOMING TODAY:

CLERGY ABUSE-PRAYER RETREAT-NEWS GUIDE

DETROIT _ U.S.-based Roman Catholic bishops will gather Wednesday for a weeklong retreat near Chicago on the church sexual abuse scandal that organizers say will focus on prayer and spiritual reflection and not formulating policy. The retreat begins a day after The Associated Press reported that the Vatican blocked U.S. bishops from taking measures last year to address the scandal because U.S. church leaders didn’t discuss the legally problematic proposals with the Holy See enough beforehand. RIVERBOAT RENAISSANCE

NEW ORLEANS _ Few experiences capture old New Orleans and the Mississippi River quite like a paddlewheel riverboat coming round the muddy bend with its tooting whistle horn, towering smoke stacks and water-churning propeller. This month the first new riverboat in more than a decade is set to launch in this Louisiana port city. The City of New Orleans riverboat is coming full circle, back to the state where it was built in 1991. For years it operated as a casino boat in Rock Island, Illinois, until the mid-1990s. But after that state legalized onshore casinos, the boat became obsolete. By Stacey Plaisance. SENT: 780 words, photos.

IN BRIEF:

_ APARTMENT SHOOTING-ARREST: Central Illinois police say a man allegedly fatally shot another man following a dispute over an apartment’s living arrangements. A judge on Monday ordered 27-year-old Dangelis Michael Chambers held on a $1 million bond in Sunday’s killing of 30-year-old Renese Donte Riley.

_ SOLAR FARM-ROCK FALLS: Planning officials in a northwestern Illinois community are opposing a proposed community solar farm just outside its city limits. Sauk Valley Media reports that the Rock Falls Plan Commission recommended that the city object to the project, saying it is incompatible with comprehensive plans of the city and Whiteside County.

SPORTS:

LAKE FOREST, Ill. _ Kicker Cody Parkey aside, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is the biggest uncertainty facing the Bears heading into Sunday’s playoff game because it’s his postseason debut. The second-year pro showed some improvement, but there were also spotty performances. UPCOMING: 600 words.
